Abstract

If someone asks us what monkeys eat, most of us would probably not hesitate to answer that undoubtedly, monkeys eat bananas. Children know it, adults confirm it and countless illustrations make it impossible to deny it. But what if it were not true? Scientifically proving that monkeys do not eat bananas is an adventure in itself, because you have to track them down. In the tropical rainforest of Veracruz, near Catemaco, among giant trees and the sound of birds, live the mantled howler monkeys. It is very easy to understand why they are called that, as they emit ear-splitting howls to communicate with each other. At the crack of dawn, it is easy to hear them, but seeing them is more difficult and, to achieve it, you have to be in the right place. The article recounts the observation of the mantled howler monkeys in the tropical rainforest of Veracruz. The text shows the ordeal of finding and following them, as well as the habits and feeding of these animals. It aims to convey a message of curiosity and admiration for nature.
